06Exploring the rocks between Big and Little Banan

Skiathos

We spent two weeks in a self-catering apartment with two of our children at Aghia Paraskevi - N39.1439° W23.4417° - on the south coast of the island. Most days we caught the regular bus service to Koukounaries Beach, which is a textile beach, then took the short walk over the hill and through the olives to Banana Beach. There are two Banana Beaches: Big Banana, the first one you come to, and Little Banana, which is to the north, or right as you face the sea.

When we were there, the far left end of Big Banana was used by naturists, with progressively more clothes being worn the further right you went, until you rounded the rocky point and reached Little Banana, which was almost exclusively naturist. On Big Banana was a snack bar offering delicious filled baguettes - our favourite was ham and salad - and drinks, and we were pleased to see that there was no need to dress to buy the food.

From our apartment balcony we had a wide view across the valley and up onto the hills beyond. One day we walked up into the hills where we were able to strip off and spend some time in nude exploration of the hilltop.

While on Skiathos, our son celebrated his fifteenth birthday. When asked what he wanted to do he said that he'd like to go parascending from Banana Beach.  We watched with trepidation as he was fixed into his harness and given his instructions. The speed boat then set off and our son ran a few steps down the beach before he was swept up into the sky. When he landed, his face was a picture of contentment.

As it is now over twenty years since our holiday on Skiathos,

we would welcome any feedback from other holidaymakers to this lovely island,

particularly about the beaches.
