03The back garden

We discovered Pike House on the Bare Britain website while looking for somewhere to stay for a winter holiday early in 2011.

Gloucestershire

The original toll house, entrance at N51.7672 W2.6088, was a small four-roomed cottage, one room being a store.  It has now been extended to include a large well-equipped kitchen, a sitting room with a dining table and a very efficient wood-burning stove, a second sitting room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.  The extension is built in the same style as the original and you really can't see the join.

The garden is completely enclosed by a wooden fence atop a stone wall on the road side and a hedge backing on to woodland on the other side.  At the end of the garden are a sauna, a summerhouse and a hot tub.

We spent a very pleasant week there in February and enjoyed using the sauna and hot tub.

From Pike House we visited several places in and around the Forest of Dean.

Cannop Ponds

These are two lakes set in many acres of woodland, complete with picnic area with tables.  The entrance is  at N51.8018 W2.5668.

Symonds Yat Rock

The entrance to the car parks is at N51.8365 W2.6326.  Symonds Yat Rock offers wonderful views across and along the Wye Valley from a vantage point about 400 feet above the river.

The Sculpture Trail

This starts at Beechenhurst Lodge, entrance at N51.8034 W2.5630, where there is a pay and display car park.  Free parking can be found nearby at N51.8089 W2.5470.  The trail is a series of sculptures along a four-mile trail.  One of them, Cathedral, is a huge stained glass window suspended above one of the paths.

There are many notices throught the Forest of Dean warning of the possibility of meeting wild boar.  We saw much evidence of where the boar had been digging in the ground, but were most disappointed not to see any of the actual animals.

Information on these and other places to visit can be found at the Forest of Dean website.
