Georgia

This was the furthest south that we travelled on our 2007 tour.  Hidden River Resort is in the southernmost part of Georgia and on one bank of St Mary's River, which is the Georgia-Florida boundary.

The camp site is 88 acres which includes a large area of woodland.  We enjoyed strolling along the woodland paths and were most disappointed not to see a rattlesnake or an alligator, although we were told that both are sometimes there.  We also enjoyed the outdoor showers.  One day we noticed a leaf behind one of the control taps and then watched as it climbed out and revealed itself as a tree frog!

While we were there the only other visitor was a retired teacher with a thirty foot Airstream caravan.  He was on his way down to Cape Canaveral to watch the launch of one of the Space Shuttles.

From here we had planned to visit the Okefenokee Swamp.  This was the reason that we had travelled so far south.  Unfortunately the whole wildlife park was closed due to fire hazard.

This was the nearest that we were able to get!

Bell Acres Resort - 2014, 2016

Bell Acres Resort - 2014, 2016

We spent a very pleasant three nights here in June on our 2014 holiday.

The site covers over 100 acres of woodland with caravans and cabins scattered through about 40 acres of it.  There is a clubhouse with a fully equipped kitchen, a swimming pool, a hot tub and a nature trail that meanders through the woodland.  There is also free wi-fi in the club house and pool area.

We stayed in one of the cabins - a basic affair with a double bed, a small table, a refrigerator, a microwave and a coffeemaker.  It also had an air-conditioning unit on one wall: very useful on hot Georgian days.  We were able to have our breakfast and midday snacks at a picnic table right outside the cabin and cook our evening meals in the clubhouse.

We were made very welcome by the managers, who kept apologising for it being rustic.  We like rustic and we liked the site very much.  The members, who came in for the weekend, were very friendly.

For shopping there is a Wal-Mart in the nearby town of Commerce: entrance at N34.2471 W83.4595.

Serendipity Park website

In 2016 we spent another six weeks in America and stayed at Serendipity, near Cleveland, for a week in April.

The site is forty-two acres and includes twenty-six units for full-time residents, other accomodation used by members and seven units for rent.  We booked the poolside cabin with a kitchen.  From our little verandah we had a view across the pool to the large clubhouse, the café, the hot tub room and the gym.  We even had a second door with another little verandah out the back.  Entry to the site is through a coded gate and visitors are given the code on arrival.

Part of the site is wooded and includes a well-maintained path that goes down to the little creek that forms the boundary on that side.  Free wi-fi is available in the clubhouse and around the pool area.

We enjoyed our stay here, but we did not like seeing the many dogs walking about without leads.  Of the dozen or more that we saw, only two were on leads.

Bell Acres seems to have suffered from mis-management in previous years and during our 2014 visit the managers were doing all they could to keep Bell Acres going.  In 2014 there were several derelict caravans and abandoned sites in the woods which gave the place a run-down look, but the clubhouse and pool were kept in very good condition.

However, in November 2014 the property was sold and already plans to develop the site are in hand.  We hope that the new owner will make Bell Acres, once again, a really great place to holiday.

From here we visited the Gold 'n' Gem gold mine, about ten miles west of Cleveland, and Consolidated Gold Mines, about ten miles further west.  At the first we washed gravel to find gemstones and at the second we had a tour of the mine and then panned for gold - and found some.

For shopping there are two big supermarkets in Cleveland: Ingles, recommended - entrance at N34.6031° W83.7639°; and Walmart - entrance at N34.5767° W83.7594°.

In 2016, during another holiday in America, we did return, but just for the day while we were staying at Serendipity Park. The managers greeted us like old friends and proudly showed us some of the improvements, including the English pub. They also told us of the great plans for further improvements.  The cabins were being upgraded and the shower blocks were due to be demolished and rebuilt.  There were even plans to convert one of the buildings into a cinema.

We then spent the rest of the day by the pool, where we were introduced to the game of Cornhole by a couple of the members.
